From Mushrooms to Chutneys

Our journey began during our college days as engineering students. We teamed up with local mushroom farmers in Mangalore for a social innovation project, putting our skills to work by developing technology to boost their productivity. But then, the unexpected happened. Covid-19 struck, and the nation went into lockdown. Sadly, many of the farmers we were working with had to abandon mushroom farming for more stable market options.

Amidst this uncertainty, we found ourselves in Nasik, Maharashtra, participating in an accelerator program. Adjusting to life in a new state was tough, especially when it came to food. After a long day of work, the thought of cooking was daunting. Thankfully, we had brought along some homemade chutney powder and sambar powder, which became our saving grace.

During this time, we were also collaborating with local women who were creating value-added products from mushrooms to make them more appealing to consumers. Despite their efforts, they struggled to establish their brand in the market. That’s when inspiration struck. We asked ourselves, ‘Why not help these women sell their products?’ And then, our moms chimed in with a brilliant idea: ‘Why not sell some of our homemade products too?’

And just like that, Prafal embarked on its journey in the FMCG sector. It was a leap of faith, but we were driven by our passion to make a difference and support local entrepreneurs. Today, we’re proud to say that Prafal continues to grow, fueled by our dedication to empowering small-scale producers and bringing quality products to consumers across the country.

Sathwik Shailesh Kumar Co Founder of Prafal Agro LLP. Prafal is your go-to destination for home made food products. We take pride in our unique approach, where skilled motherscraft our products in their homes, preserving the natural essence of Indian cuisine without any chemicals or preservatives. pickles, chutney, chutney pudis/powders, smabar masala sweets etc are our products. Prafal aims to create a seamless and sustainable platform that streamlines the process of sourcing high-quality fresh produce for homemade food producers while simultaneously providing effective marketing solutions to both farmers and producers. By doing so, we aim to optimize the distribution of fresh produce, enhance market access for small-scale producers, and foster a thriving and equitable marketplace for all stakeholders involved. The process involves procurement of fresh produce from farmers through a contract farming approach. The produce is then provided to women who process the produce into value added products that are then sold in bulk to a Prafal processing point in that village. The product is then packaged and marketed to supermarkets in tier 1 and tier 2 cities. When scaling up production, we plan on creating a centralised facility where the pre-processing of the produce can be done before providing them to individual home producers.
